The Apple Vision Pro: Friend or Foe to Human Bonds?

The Apple Vision Pro: Friend or Foe to Human Bonds?

Have you seen it? Apple’s newest product, their “spatial computer” or simply put, a headset, is out. I’ve used the Oculus headset, so having such a gadget on my face is no big deal. But the kicker is, these gizmos are mostly geared towards solo fun.

The Internet was supposed to bring us closer to our dear ones, right? But it feels like it’s done the opposite.

This spatial computer from Apple has some nifty features. The biggest one? Its screen uses augmented reality (AR). This lets you stay in touch with what’s around you while you use it. So you can still chat with people, see them, and they can see your eyes too. But in the demo, folks were watching movies and playing games all by themselves. What happened to enjoying a movie together as a family? Or playing together as a group – remember guitar hero?

If this device takes off, we might find ourselves tied to apps and computers more than ever. We could end up busier, with even less free time. The thought of being able to see messages and apps everywhere, all the time, doesn’t sit well with me. In fact, I do my best to dodge it. The idea of being “super productive” by giving up my downtime and my moments with my dear ones? No, thank you. How about you?

I can see the point of using this tool for work or when you’re traveling solo. But using it at home, around my family and friends? That’s a hard pass. We already have enough tech like headphones, phones, and tablets that get in the way of our chats. This seems even more invasive. Just because people can see your eyes doesn’t make it any less intrusive.

Lastly, this gadget doesn’t come cheap, and it won’t be up for sale until sometime next year, Apple says. Will it become a regular sight? Only time will tell. And frankly, I hope it doesn’t, at least not at home.
