I just finished listening to Seth Godin’s audiobook The Icarus Deception. It was a great listen, albeit uncomfortable at times due to the many truths Seth shares.

The book was released in 2012, and I regret not having discovered it until recently. Although I’m a subscriber to Seth’s blog, it was only a few days ago that I stumbled upon a page on his website listing all of his books.

The Icarus Deception focuses on the idea that we have all been indoctrinated, and most of us don’t even realize it. It advocates for treating our work as art and encourages us to aspire to greater heights. It’s very inspiring, and I believe that if I had read it back in 2012, I might have made different professional decisions.

I’ve been working in software development since 2005, but I’ve always had other interests like connecting people, photography, and writing. A book like The Icarus Deception would have helped me overcome some of the fears I faced when making decisions many years ago. But it’s never too late, and now that I’ve listened to it, I am planning to follow some of the advice and pursue some ideas that came to me while listening.

In the end, life is about the journey, isn’t it? So, I’ll continue to seek out interesting ideas and try them if they appeal to me, like many of the ideas in this book. Much of it may not be new, but it helps to be reminded of the lessons we’ve learned along the way, especially when we’re constantly inundated with information.
